Good news! If you're a lawfully present immigrant, you can get health insurance through the Marketplace. You might even qualify for savings based on your income. This includes:
- "Qualified non-citizens"
- Those with humanitarian statuses
- Valid non-immigrant visa holders
- And more! Get the full list here!
Savings on Marketplace Plans
Your income plays a big role in determining your savings:
- Above 400% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL)? You might still get tax credits.
- Between 100% and 400% FPL? You could qualify for premium tax credits and other savings.
- Below 100% FPL? You may still get savings if you're not eligible for Medicaid.
- If your annual income is at or below 150% FPL and you’re not eligible for Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP): You may be able to enroll in or change Marketplace coverage through a Special Enrollment Period.
Medicaid and CHIP for Immigrants
If you're a "qualified non-citizen," you might be eligible for Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). However, there's often a 5-year waiting period, with some exceptions.
Good to know: Many states offer Medicaid or CHIP coverage to lawfully residing children and pregnant people without the 5-year wait. Always check to see what states lawfully cover pregnant people and children.
Emergency Care
Even without eligible immigration status, Medicaid covers emergency medical conditions if you meet other eligibility criteria.
